A faction of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Moulvibazar organized a protest rally on Thursday, demanding the immediate cancellation of the upcoming Upazila BNP conference and council, as well as the dissolution of 12 union-level committees under the Sadar Upazila.
The demonstration began at noon at the Shaheed Minar premises in Moulvibazar town and paraded through key streets before concluding with a protest gathering in the Kusumbagh area. Organized under the banner of grassroots leaders and activists, the participants voiced strong opposition to the scheduled conference, alleging a lack of fairness and inclusivity in the committee formation process.
Speakers at the rally called for the dissolution of all 12 union committees and demanded a new council date only after forming impartial and inclusive committees that reflect the voices of persecuted and long-serving grassroots members.
The protest meeting was presided over by Mohitur Rahman, a senior joint convener of the Sadar Upazila BNP and a member of the district BNP’s convening committee. The event was moderated by Wahidur Rahman, a committee member of the Sadar Upazila unit. Other prominent speakers included Mahmudur Rahman, Khalichur Rahman, former municipal councilor Swagato Kishore Das Chowdhury, BNP leaders Mahbub Ijdhani and Selim Mohammad Salahuddin.
According to party sources, the Sadar Upazila BNP has completed all preparations for the scheduled conference and council on June 22. Elections will be held for five key positions, including president and general secretary, with 16 candidates vying for these posts. There are two candidates each for the president and general secretary positions.
The election commission overseeing the council confirmed that ballot papers and voter lists with photographs are currently being printed. Presiding officers, polling agents, and polling officials have already been appointed. Voting will take place in six booths, with 923 eligible voters from 13 units under the Sadar Upazila BNP.
Top BNP leaders, including Standing Committee Member Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, Organizing Secretary GK Gaus, Joint Organizing Secretary Miftah Siddiqui, Chairperson’s Adviser Ariful Haque Chowdhury, National Executive Committee Member M. Naser Rahman, District BNP Convener Faizul Karim Mayun, and Member Secretary Abdur Rahim Ripon are expected to attend the conference.
When contacted, Sadar Upazila BNP Convener Badrul Alam stated that the current committee was formed through discussions and consensus, including input from Mohitur Rahman's faction. Around 130 individuals from that faction were incorporated into different committees. He said, "There is no longer an opportunity to cancel the conference. Only two days remain, and the event will proceed as per central directives."
District BNP Convener Faizul Karim Mayun also commented, "We instructed the union and upazila committees to work inclusively, which they have done. An election commission has been formed accordingly. We are now working to understand the different perspectives and ensure resolution."
